Smoking In Islam
Q: I understand that smoking is unlawful (haram) in Islam. However, it came to my attention that there is no consensus among Muslim scholars about this banning. I would therefore appreciate it if you would endorse it with evidence from the Holy Quran and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Answer: All praise and thanks are to Allah, Lord of All Worlds. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet, the Chief of all Messengers, Muhammad and upon his family and Companions...

It is very well known that tobacco smoking is a major factor in the development of many cases of cancer, heart diseases, chronic respiratory and respiratory diseases and other ailments. It is a poison that leads to slow suicide.

The majority of Islamic scholars have issued Islamic rulings forbidding smoking. Since cigarettes are a new invention, there is no clear banning in the Quran or the Sunnah. However, several Islamic research institutes have based it on abundant evidence that killing or harming oneself or others are both prohibited. Allah, the exalted, says in the Holy Qur'an: "And do not throw yourselves into destruction"(2:195).Also, in the Holy Qur'an :" and "Slay not the life which God has forbidden." (17:33)." Nor kill or destroy yourselves for verily God has been to you most Merciful" (4:29).

Moreover, Prophet Muhammad (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:"Do not harm yourselves or others." Smoking not only harm the smoker but whoever is in his/her company as well. Indeed, research has shown that non-smokers who breathe in "secondhand" smoke, take in nicotine and other toxic chemicals just like smokers do. They are therefore prone to the same health risks as smokers.

The amount of money a smoker spends on cigarette smoking is simply wasted. It goes against Allah, the Exalted, saying:" But squander not your wealth in the manner of a spend thrift, verily spendthrifts are brothers of evils." (17:26-27).
